There are many different speaker configurations you can get. They range from the basic 2-piece speaker set to the 6-piece speaker set for surround sound. A 2-piece speaker set is good enough for listening to CD or MP3 music. For the best in DVD audio and gaming sound, go with 3 or more speakers. There is also a type of speaker called a flat panel speaker. As the name implies, these speakers have a flat panel because they use a different technology to produce sound. You get clear, accurate sound with flat panel speakers, but the lower frequencies are not very effective. If you go with flat panel, make sure it comes with a subwoofer to boost the lower frequency range. Beware of speakers that advertise their wattage in PMPO (Peek Music Power Output). This is a deceptive measurement. The true wattage is much less than this. I recommend avoiding these type of speakers as they usually have nothing else going for them. You will also find USB speakers in the mix. USB speakers actually do not require a sound card. Rather, the sound playing is done through software and the signal sent over the USB line. I personally do not like this setup. Just get a sound card and let the hardware do the work. I recommend checking out Altec Lansing computer speakers. Altec Lansing is a leading manufacturer of sound system equipment and has been around for a long time. Want to see what is popular? Check out the top 10 speakers. |
